SUNY Binghamton has a Hillel, a Chabad, Jewish Greek life organizations, and a Center for Israel Studies (CIS).

Litigation & Investigations

In January 2024, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a Title VI investigation into Binghamton following allegations that the University had failed to adequately respond to discrimination and threats made against its Jewish students.

In March 2025, Binghamton University was one of the 60 schools that received a letter from the Department of Education accusing them of violating Title VI.

What’s Happening on Campus?

In April 2024, the Binghamton University Student Government passed a BDS resolution. The resolution was rescinded in October 2024 and, in January 2025, the Student Government posted a statement condemning divestment from Israel.

In October 2025, at an anti-Israel rally organized by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Binghamton Solidarity for Palestine, protesters displayed signs that read: "From the river to the sea," a slogan commonly used to call for an end to the Jewish state.

University Policies and Responsive Action

Binghamton has multiple organized administrative structures to address antisemitism, including a group of campus administrators from all campus sectors who meet weekly to review any relevant items; a bi-weekly meeting with senior staff, the chief of police, and Hillel and Chabad designed to review upcoming and past events and on-going efforts to create a supportive campus environment; and monthly meetings between senior staff and student leaders of four different Jewish student organizations. The impact of these meetings has included revisions to campus reservations and posting policies and changes to practices with respect to police protection for faith-based events.

All faculty, staff, and student employees are required to complete mandatory Title VI, harassment, and non-discrimination training modules. Such trainings are also mandatory for some students – including student organization leaders. These trainings contain explicit discussions of antisemitism.

Binghamton also launched its Civil Dialogue Project (CDP) in August 2023 as a pilot program and scaled the program in July 2024. The CDP is a required module in Binghamton’s First Year Experience course in which approximately 1000 new students enroll each year.  Additionally, effective August 2026, all SUNY institutions including Binghamton will require all students to satisfy a general education requirement in civil discourse.

Furthermore, multiple senior campus leaders have a long-standing practice of attending Shabbat dinners and religious and cultural special events hosted by Chabad and Hillel.  In addition, when Hanukkah occurs when the campus is still in session, the University sponsors a celebration in partnership with Chabad and Hillel. The University will also further expand its existing kosher dining options in Fall 2026 in response to additional student demand.
