Litigation & Investigations

In December 2024, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights entered into a resolution agreement with Temple, outlining a series of actions that the University must take to address antisemitism on campus.

In March 2025, Temple University was one of the 60 schools that received a letter from the Department of Education accusing them of violating Title VI.

What’s Happening on Campus?

In June 2024, it was announced that a number of Temple students were facing charges for participating in a University of Pennsylvania encampment protest.

In July 2024, an off-campus home in which members of the Jewish fraternity AEPi reside experienced an intruder who opened the roof hatch and made a crude gesture. This followed earlier incidents of trespass and vandalism reported at the property in May 2024.

In August 2024, a group of Temple students and non-Temple individuals protested in front of the campus Hillel, chanting at those within the building.

In September 2024, student and non-student protesters disrupted a career fair using a bullhorn, resulting in some arrests. In October 2024, anti-Israel leaflets were distributed on campus. In November 2024, an off-campus home in which members of a Jewish fraternity reside was vandalized with graffiti that read "Israel [equals] genocide."

In August 2025, U.S. Senators Dave McCormick and John Fetterman sent a letter addressed to Temple's President Fry urging the protection of Jewish students amidst a rise in antisemitic incidents on Pennsylvania college campuses. That same month, a drawing of a Star of David, a crown and "JAP" were written in chalk at Temple near the residence of Jewish students.

University Policies and Responsive Action

The presence of the Interfaith Inclusion Center underscores the University's support for diverse religious identities. Civil discourse has also been a core priority on campus, with the Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL) department enabling difficult conversations on campus.

In 2022, the University established the Blue Ribbon Commission on Antisemitism and University Responses, which has made a number of recommendations that the University has implemented, including the appointment of a Special Advisor on Antisemitism. The University continues to consult with commission members regularly.

Following the May and July 2024 incidents at AEPi, the University condemned the actions and launched an investigation. Additionally, Temple addressed the September 2024 protest disruption by outlining conduct violations and potential consequences, reinforcing its policies on acceptable behavior.

In advance of the 2025-26 academic year, Temple updated its Student Conduct Code and anti-harassment policy to explicitly prohibit antisemitism, as well as anti-Israeli discrimination and masked harassment.

In Fall 2025, the University began requiring all faculty, staff, and students to complete training that addresses discrimination related to religion, ethnicity, national origin, and shared ancestry. The training addresses bias as it relates to Zionism, Jewish identity, and Jewish practice to encourage an informed and welcoming community. Furthermore, Student Affairs and IDEAL offer numerous other training opportunities about discrimination and harassment based on protected characteristics.

In 2025, the University enhanced its Kosher dining options by opening the Kosher Corner.
