Nevada Anti-Doxing Bill Signed into Law
Carson City, Nevada – On June 6th, 2021, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed into law anti-doxing legislation (Assembly Bill 296).
ADL is proud to have played a significant role drafting this important bill as part of our Backspace Hate initiative. Assembly Bill 296 was championed by Assemblywoman Rochelle Nguyen, a true leader in the fight against online hate. Additionally, this success would not be possible without the generous support of Alisa Nave-Worth.
Doxing is one form of online harassment that is gaining traction. Doxing is the posting of private or identifying information about an individual, group or organization with the intent that the information be used against the target for an unlawful purpose. These actions are a severe threat to our community and disproportionately impact the ability of marginalized communities to be safe in both digital and physical spaces.
We thank Governor Sisolak for prioritizing this cause by signing Assembly Bill 296 into law. This legislation is a foundational approach to addressing the growing rate of hate and harassment online in Nevada and protecting victims and targets of doxing. “In these times, our work to protect our communities from online violence is incredibly important,” said Jolie Brislin, ADL’s Nevada Regional Director. “While the bill is a positive step forward, doxing does not simply cease to exist with the stroke of a pen. We are committed toward long-term strategies to improve Nevada’s laws to fight hate both online and on the ground.”
ADL is on the frontlines in the fight against online hate and extremism. In March, we announced the REPAIR Plan to fight online hate and extremism. The REPAIR Plan encompasses work like Backspace Hate, our initiative supporting targets of online harassment by raising awareness and passing legislation to better hold perpetrators accountable for their actions online. Assembly Bill 296 brings us one step closer to giving targets of online harassment adequate access to justice.
