Statement on the newly elected Pope Leo XIV

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) extends its congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election as the new head of the Catholic Church. As he assumes this sacred role, we look forward to building upon the legacy of cooperation between the Catholic Church and the Jewish people.

“For decades, relations between the Catholic Church and the global Jewish community have steadily strengthened,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO and National Director. “We hope Pope Leo XIV will continue this historic trajectory - rejecting antisemitism in all its forms, promoting mutual understanding, and upholding the shared values of peace, compassion, and human dignity.”

A cornerstone of this evolving relationship was the 1965 declaration Nostra Aetate, which transformed centuries of painful history between Christians and Jews. It remains a guiding light for dialogue and reconciliation.

ADL remains committed to interfaith partnership and advancing dialogue to counter hate, extremism, and bigotry worldwide. In this moment of global uncertainty, we are reminded of the vital moral leadership faith communities can offer in defending vulnerable populations and advocating for justice.

We look forward to opportunities for engagement and collaboration with Pope Leo XIV and the Vatican in the spirit of fraternity and mutual respect.
