Message from the CEO and National Director

Courage. Respect. Collaboration. Inclusion. Integrity. Credibility. Accountability. These seven core values drive our work at ADL.

Anti-Semitism/Never Is Now

Anti-Semitism Never is Now
Overwhelmed by cyberhate.   ‘Suddenly, every stereotype, every line of attack that you ever read about or heard about in Sunday School was coming at you.’ Jonathan Weisman Deputy Washington Editor, The New York Times Jewish journalists on the front lines. Deluged by hate on social media. For The New York Times political reporter Jonathan Weisman, it started with a tweet. As he had done so many times before, he read an interesting article—it happened to be…

Excerpt of the Anti-Defamation League Founding Charter

As appeared in B'nai B'rith News, October 1913For a number of years a tendency has manifested itself in American life toward the caricaturing and defaming of Jews on the stage, in moving pictures. The effect of this on the unthinking public has been to create an untrue and injurious impression of an entire people and to expose the Jew to undeserved contempt and ridicule. The caricatures center around some idiosyncrasy of the few which, by the thoughtless public, is often taken as a pivotal…

Jan Karski Courage to Care Award

On April 23, 1987, the Anti-Defamation League created a unique award called “Courage to Care” to honor rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust era. The ADL Courage to Care Award was renamed in 2011 in honor of one of its first recipients, Jan Karski, a Polish diplomat and righteous gentile who provided the West with one of the first eyewitness accounts of Hitler's Final Solution. The award is a plaque with miniature bas-reliefs that depicts the horrifying context — the…

Our Mission

To stop the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure justice and fair treatment to all... When Chicago attorney Sigmund Livingston founded ADL in 1913, he envisioned an America where those who seemed different were not targets of discrimination and threats, but were equals, worthy of shared opportunity and a place in the American dream. This vision remains relevant today, its call to action as urgent. While we have accomplished a great deal, much work is left to be done. We want an…

Our History

Toward Justice for All ADL was born at a time when American Jews—both new immigrants and generations-long members of our society—were experiencing deep-seated bigotry. Culture turned a blind eye to what today would be called hate crimes. It was time to become proactive. Reflecting a Jewish tradition and the ADL value of inclusion, we chose a mission of securing justice not only for Jews but for all people. It was time to stand up for every American living in jeopardy and…
